There was a time when I traveled to and stayed in downtown Los Angeles for business frequently. Even then, the area had no soul, and it emptied out at night - everyone went home. It seems even worse now from your reporting. .
I left burbank in 1999. Went to school at LAC USC nursing school, did a project at the union mission on skid row in 1986. My daughter lives near skid row as she works as a lawyer for a city nonprofit and cannot afford much else and it's close to the courthouse. I cannot believe how much worse it has become and how many close call crimes she's suffered including being in a 7-11 during a shooting. Somehow she doesn't see it that way and still votes Democrat. It I literally a third world nation surrounded by elites just a few miles away telling you what a beautiful city it is
I stayed in downtown LA for 2 weeks in 1992 and I remember feeling that way. Muggings were routine and the people working in the hotel told me not to be outside after dark. It felt... dangerous. However, I remember LA during the 1970s.
They threw a lot of money at downtown in the last 15 years to revitalize it and make it liveable. But poor planning, no parking and ridiculously high rents killed it.
What's with the Hamas and Palestine flags at this protest, visible in the video? What's with the Keffiyas? What does that have to do with an objection to U.S. immigration policy?

Hamas tortured and executed terrorists within its ranks who allegedly had gay sex, shocking documents show — as sources added some male Israeli victims of the Oct. 7 massacre were raped in captivity.
The Iranian proxy terror group had a running list of recruits who were found to have failed Hamas’ “morality checks” by having same-sex relations — and they paid a heavy price, according to documents recovered by the Israel Defense Forces and shared with The Post.
The documents reveal the “crimes” that were allegedly committed by 94 Hamas recruits — lumping “homosexual conversations,” “flirting with girls without a legal relationship” and “sodomy” in with serious allegations of child rape and torture.

The allegations, dated between 2012 and 2019, involve recruits to Hamas’ intelligence, military and interior ministry and say the new members were eventually deemed “unacceptable” to continue working with the terror group because of their actions.
“He constantly curses God,” according to one allegation, which added, “Information was received that he sexually harassed a young child.“
The major issue in homelessness is not the lack of housing. It's the refusal of society to say no. No, you can't camp in this city. No, you can't shit in the streets. No, you can't panhandle aggressively. No, you can't shoot up publicly and leave your used needles lying around. The fact that we are not going to allow you to destroy our city by doing these things is not our problem. It's your problem. You can solve your problem by not doing drugs, getting help for your mental problems, getting a job, and sharing rent with others so inclined until you can afford a place of your own, probably in a lower cost community. This is not going to happen because the people we have elected allow the homeless to wallow in their victimhood rather than accept personal responsibility for their self destructiveness.
What specific steps should be taken by cities to deal with the problem? Cities should use all existing shelters and further provide simple shelter space with surplus military tents with mess and recreational tents, a medical tent and restroom and shower facilities (the way I lived in the army) on leased or purchased unused commercial or industrial sites on the outskirts of the city. As many who want to and are able to work should be hired to help feed others and to maintain the facilities. Individuals could use surplus military squad tents or their own for sleeping. When those facilities were available they should send in crews to clean up existing encampments, without arresting anyone who did not physically resist.
They should require custodial care for those who are so mentally or drug addicted that they cannot care for themselves. We did a huge disservice to the mentally ill when we closed rather than reform our state mental hospitals. We need them back. This approach actually would cost far less and be far more effective than the current housing first attempts to fix the problem. Most of our homeless lack the capacity to live unassisted in modern society but that is not an excuse to destroy our beautiful cities for the rest of us.
Primary every politician, every DA, every head of city services (police, fire, sanitation, health) and grab the city back. Reporting on it is important, but the only way it will change is if people put down their cameras and be a part of letting the voters know they can change it.

Thank you for your great work. Most of the parents of these protesters don’t support these miscreants and their illegal activities. They escaped the failed countries to live in the United States. All these protesters should leave the country. As a native generational Angelino, 60+ years, my father was born in Boyle Heights, this paradise has become purgatory. Illiberal mind control and mismanagement is the predicted outcome of socialist fantasy ideology. The bicoastal elites, living to the west in Brentwood, never have to suffer from the chaos they financially finance and support. One would think the recent catastrophic wildfires would change their minds but it probably won’t. Their incarceration in the future gulags might. The problems in Los Angeles are intractable.
It’s usually a fire truck that hoses off the crime scene blood. I guess the rotund butch infamous lesbian on the LAFD payroll thinks that outside her job description too.
Same thing in Portland, OR. A once great city is now a failed one.
All of LA is basically becoming a sunny version of Portland.

It definitely has no soul. That is a great way to describe it.

Sounds like Manila during the 1980s.

Illegals do not have a sense of ownership that citizen residents do. So why not just trash the place. Our leadersip sucks.

Downtown LA is a paradise compared to Portland, where drug addicts can be found in every neighborhood, except west hills of course.
