Democrats Thankfully Remind Us What They Want To Do If They Take Back Congress

This morning, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced he is introducing the “Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2025.” and for that I’m thankful he and other Democrats are reminding Americans what they want to do if they retake Congress in the 2026 midterms.
It is hard to remember how popular attempts to pass an “assault weapons” ban were in the early 2000’s and 2010’s, as nearly every time there was a shooting to capitalize on, Democrats wanted to pass a similar ban from the 90’s whether it would have prevented the shooting or not.
With much of the nation’s attention focused on the economy and immigration, Schiff decided now was the time to tell Americans he wants to disarm law-abiding citizens.
“A bill that would ban the sale, manufacture, import, and transfer of military-style assault weapons,” Schiff said about his bill, saying it is to carry on the legacy of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein since she pushed the first ban over the finish line in the 90’s.
Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) said at a press event on Wednesday that, “We are going to keep pressing because not only is the assault weapons ban the right thing to do, it is the popular thing to do. Every single year when you…ask Americans what they think of an assault weapons ban, of just making sure that these weapons designed to kill as many people as quickly possible, are solely in the hands of the military and law enforcement…they tell Congress that it’s time, it’s past time, to stand up and do the right thing.”
Putting aside Murphy said in the exact same sentence he wants to ban “weapons designed to kill as many people as quickly possible” so they are only in the hands of government agents, it should be no surprise the first part where he claims these bans being popular is not really true.
For one thing, Democrats didn’t pass a ban when they controlled Congress and Joe Biden was president before the 2022 midterms. Seemed like a good opportunity to get that into law if it is so popular.
Next, the polling is all over the place. A Morning Consult poll from October 2023 found 67% of registered voters supported banning “assault-style weapons,” but a Monmouth University poll from March 2023 found support for such a ban dropped to 46%, with 49% opposed, from 55% when they asked about the issue in June 2022.
Bans on handguns are consistently unpopular and have been for a very long time, evidenced by how concealed carry is allowed, to varying degrees, across the country.
“Federal assault weapons ban coming our way if this guy has anything to say about it. Gun owners, be complacent about federal threats to your rights at your peril,” Hannah Hill, vice president of the National Foundation for Gun Rights, said in response to Murphy.
Will Schiff’s bill go anywhere? It is very unlikely, and Schiff knows that. So it is interesting he’s willing to champion this issue now instead of in a scenario that would produce his preferred outcome.
Regardless, the Firearms Policy Coalition kept their response to Schiff’s announcement short and sweet: “Fuck you. No.”

Thank you for the article! It is good to know what they’re trying to throw at the wall, even if nothing sticks.
One of the worst human beings to ever serve in Congress. A horrible person.
