MEXICO CITY, Mexico — Chaos reigned in the capital’s historic plaza and National Palace as tens of thousands of anti-cartel and anti-President Sheinbaum protesters tore down security walls and fought with police.

Saturday’s explosive gathering was long in the making in the aftermath of the cartel-linked assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo. Tension has been rising leading up to Saturday’s protest as President Sheinbaum was dismissing the event as nothing more than right-wing propaganda and bots.

The crowd was successful in tearing down a majority of the temporary security wall, bringing police and rioters face-to-face. Chunks of concrete and rocks were thrown by both police and protesters. Policemen lost control of their riot shields, giving the crowd better cover to advance on the police line.

Many people were injured by the thrown rocks, with having witnessed people bleeding from the face and arms.
